GST, TDS and ITR Compliance for Businesses in South Mumbai

A working note on GST returns, TDS defaults and ITR / tax-audit timelines for businesses operating around Masjid, Fort and South Mumbai.

GST, TDS and ITR Compliance for Businesses in South Mumbai

Most South Mumbai businesses do not fail compliance because they ignore the law. They fail it because GST, TDS and income-tax sit on three different calendars and the books are one or two months behind the return. The mismatch shows up as interest, notices and, in older files, demands that run across several years.

From our office at Bharat Chambers, Baroda Street, Masjid East, we see the same pattern on trading, services and professional firms around Masjid Bunder, Crawford Market, Fort and CST. GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filed on time, but ITC not reconciled to 2B. TDS deposited, but the quarterly statement not matching the books — which is how demands from FY 2010-11 onwards still sit on some TAN logins. We recently closed ₹30 lakh of accumulated TDS demands spanning FY 2010-11 to 2024-25 by reconciling the ledger to traces, not by arguing the notice first.

A usable monthly rhythm

Week 1: books closed for the previous month, bank and GST 2B matched. Week 2: GSTR-1. Week 3: GSTR-3B and TDS workings. After year-end: tax audit if applicable, then ITR. None of this is new. It only works if one person owns the calendar and the working papers live in one place.

ITR filing is the last step, not the first. For FY 2023-24 our practice filed returns for 500+ clients and completed 45+ tax audits. The files that moved cleanly were the ones where GST and TDS were already tied to the books before 31 March.

If you run a business in Masjid, Fort or anywhere in South Mumbai and the returns are current but the books are not — or the other way around — the first meeting should be a review of GSTR-2B, Form 26AS and the last trial balance. That is enough to know whether the year is closeable.
